Instrumentaler Jugendschutz: El Michels Affair mit „Adult Themes“ // Exclusive

Als er 1997 THE MESSAGE gründete, hatte er gar keine…

Es war kurz nach seiner Highschool-Zeit, als sich das 90er-Kid Leon Michels eine Band zusammenstellte – nicht irgendeine Band. Sie bestand aus Mitmusikern von Gruppen wie Antibalas, Dap Kings und anderen Größen der New Yorker Szene.

Das Projekt, mit dem der Junge, der gerne alte Soul-Schallplatten hörte, den Durchbruch schaffte, war an seinen bürgerlichen Namen angelegt: El Michels Affair. Mit „Enter the 37th Chamber“ schuf er die fehlende Verbindungsbrücke zwischen RZAs weedgetränkten Wu-Tang-Beats und deren Grundlagen. Ausgehend von einer Show mit Reakwon begann die Band, an Instrumentals des Clans zu arbeiten, was in weiterer Folge in einem Album und einem 2017 erschienenen Nachfolger „Return to the 37 Chambers“ mündete. Wenn man so will, ein Vorläufer für Bands wie BadBadNotGood, auch wenn sie einen teils anderen Zugang und musikalischen Hintergrund haben.

In weiterer Folge war Leon Michels nicht mehr aus der so genannten Retro-Soul-Welle der 2000er Jahre weg zu denken. Monahan Street Band, Lee Fields, Daptone Records, Sharon Jones und viele mehr sind Namen, die eng mit dem Multiinstrumentalisten verbunden sind. Mit dem Welthit „I Need a Dollar“ von Aloe Blacc, den er mit seinem Partner für Truth and Soul Records produzierte, ist zumindest seine Musik und Handschrift für viele ein Begriff. Seitdem hat Michels mit seinem sehr speziellen Sound Künstler wie Adele, Dr. John oder Lana Del Rey unterstützt.

Nun kehrt er nach längeren Ausflügen in die Welt der Sample-Studioproduktion für diverse HipHop-Produzenten zurück. Mit gewissem Stolz präsentiert Big Crown Records „Adult Themes“, die neue LP von El Michels Affair. Das Album taucht tief in die „Cinematic Soul“-Ästhetik der Band ein und schickt die Hörer auf eine wilde Reise durch Stimmungen und Vibes. 2016 war Leon Michels Mitbegründer von Big Crown Records und ist seitdem als Produzent für den Großteil der Musik verantwortlich, die das Label veröffentlicht.

Adult Themes

Das Album „Adult Themes“ ist die langersehnte Rückkehr zu Eigenkompositionen der Band. 2017 vertrieb sich Leon Michels die Zeit zwischen Produktion, Auftritten und der Arbeit für andere Künstler damit, Interludes aufzunehmen, die er HipHop-Produzenten als Samples zur Verfügung stellte. Jay Z & Beyoncé, Travis Scott und Don Toliver schufen aus einigen dieser Stücke neue Songs. Die Snippets, selten länger als eine Minute, waren beeinflusst von Komponisten aus den Sechzigern wie David Axelrod und François de Roubaix sowie von Moondogs Spielart des klassischen Jazz. Dabei hatte Michels so viel Spaß, dass er beschloss, aus diesen Ideen mehr zu machen. So schrieb er schließlich den Soundtrack für einen Film, der nie gedreht wurde: das fiktive Werk „Adult Themes“.

Songs wie „Rubix“ und „Villa“ sind dicht orchestriert und haben den harten Drum-Sound, für den die El Michels Affair bekannt ist. Auf „Life of Pablo“ gibt Leons Sohn sein Debüt und eröffnet einen Song mit Arrangement und bewegender Stimmung.

Das ist das Schöne an instrumentaler Musik: Die Hörer entscheiden, welche Geschichte die Musik erzählt. Mit „Adult Themes“ kann jede/r seine eigenen Fantasien zu instrumentaler Schlafzimmermusik spinnen. Jede/r ganz nach seinen Vorlieben, gibt’s schließlich keine Lyrics, die Bilder vorgeben könnten.

The Message hatte die Gelegenheit, Leon Michels einige Fragen zu seinem neuen Album „Adult Themes“, das am 8. Mai erscheint, zu stellen.

The Message: How did you come up with this project? Why this theme?

Leon Michels: I was at my friends house and he played me the „Daughters of Darkness“ soundtrack by Francois Duroubaix and I was so floored by it. I wanted to make a record inspired by records like those. Also, the idea of making “soundtrack” music meant nothing really had to stand alone, every song just had to convey some sort of strong mood. They didn’t have to be catchy or have a beginning, middle or end.

Who was involved?

The core band is Nick Movshon bass, Homer Steinweiss drums, Paul spring guitar, Michael Leonhart brass and brass arrangement and me, Leon Michels, on piano guitar sax flute organ percussion vocals and more.

What are the references, artists or records that influenced you in doing this specific record?

Serge Gainsbourg, François de Roubaix, Riz Ortalani. But also I had been making samples for HipHop producers and that had informed a lot of my decisions, especially have minimal drums and unusual sounds.

What are characteristics of an „Adult Theme“ and its sound? What are the instruments that convey that sound?

If I had to choose one probably the horns, especially the brass. But everything matters really.

Do you think the associations are universal or are there culturally different stimulating sounds? Do they work in every culture? Or is it specific to our western world?

It’s instrumental music so there are no lyrics that can be misunderstood or not understood at all. I think any type of music works in every culture tho. Especially now with the internet. If you like music you should be trying to listen to things from all around the world.

How hard is it to convey a certain feeling if there are no lyrics? What are the keys?

Sometimes it’s easier cause the feeling is only inspired by the instruments and the notes.

Will there be videos or isn’t it better leaving this kind of visualization to every listeners fantasy.

There might be, I’m working on some. People will probably have their own experience with the music regardless if there is a video attached to it.
