Die Resonanz zu „Rubble Kings“ dürfte Regisseur Shan Nicholson ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern. Daniel M. Gold von der New York Times, um nur eine von vielen positiven Kritiken aufzugreifen, resümierte über die Dokumentation mit den Worten „Rubble Kings“ is a fascinating, valuable work of social, music and New York history“. Nicholsons filmisches Porträt der siebziger Jahre Bronx, sozialer Brennpunkt und Ursprungsort für die HipHop-Kultur, sollte man daher unbedingt gesehen haben. Und auch der Film-inspirierten Compilation seine Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Für „Rubble Kings: The Album“ war Little Shalimar zuständig, der nicht nur den Score der Dokumentation, sondern auch die Tracks der Compilation gänzlich produzierte. Darauf finden sich mit Mr. Muthafuckin‘ eXquire, Bun B, Ghostface Killah, Ka oder Run The Jewels einige sehr prominente Namen wieder. Letztere steuerten „Rubble Kings Theme (Dynamite)“ bei, das schon als Teil der Adult Swim-Singles-Reihe bekannt sein dürfte. Little Shalimar wählte den Track nun als erste Videosingle aus. Im – natürlich von Nicholson animierten – Video wird nicht mit Gewalt gespart. Der Regisseur erklärt den Plot auf folgende Weise:
This video was inspired by the Rubble Kings documentary and the works of the great Ralph Bakshi. The video depicts a story of street justice in the turbulent streets of the 1970’s South Bronx. We follow ‚Little Nina‘, who’s violently attacked by a rival gang on her way home from her grandmother’s house. What follows is an all out rumble between her gang, the fictionalized ‚Rubble Kings‘ and the ‚Javelins‘. Run the Jewels alongside producer Little Shalimar provide the rugged soundtrack to the piece.
