Überraschung geglückt: Am Nachmittag des 5. Mai kündigte James Blake an, dass sein drittes Album „The Colour in Anything“ zu Mitternacht erscheinen wird. Nach den wilden Spekulationen um den Releasedate in den vergangenen Monaten wohl die einzig richtige Reaktion. Wäre zudem zu schade, wenn er dieses Werk noch länger der Öffentlichkeit verborgen hätte, denn: „The Colour in Anything“ ist ein grandioses Album. Man soll mit Lob immer sparsam umgehen, aber was der Brite gemeinsam mit Rick Rubin hier fabrizierte, ist einfach großes Kino. Nicht einmal das versprochene Kanye-West-Feature auf „Timeless“ fehlt.
Die Kollaboration mit Bon Iver fand hingegen ihren Weg auf die Tracklist des Albums: „I Need a Forest Fire“ nennt sich der überaus emotionale Track, in dem James Blake unter Mithilfe von Bon-Iver-Frontmann Justin Vernon die unausweichliche Situation der Beendigung einer Beziehung thematisiert. Im Blake’schen Wortlaut „I’m saved by nature/But it always forgets what I need/I hope you’ll stop me before I build a wall around me/We need a forest fire“ lautend. Abstrakt, wenngleich mit beeindruckender künstlerischer Schönheit. Gleiches gilt für das Video. James Blake zeigt sich also in hervorragender Form (siehe seine Beteiligungen an Beyoncés „Lemonade“) – gute Vorzeichen für das neue Frank-Ocean-Album, James Blakes nächstem Großprojekt.

I explored sitting at the piano and singing a lot more. I would talk with Justin Vernon, who is a great producer—a lot of people may not know that about him. He’s a good person to talk to. Much like Rick [Rubin], actually. Justin is an incredibly warm man. We’ve become really good friends. When I first met him, it felt like we had been separated somewhere down the line and were meeting each other again. It was a very strange feeling. In the studio, he would say things like, “Oh man, I love the chords in that track,” and that gave me so much confidence. Singing standing up at a mic with someone else recording was new, too; there never was any time to set up properly before.
